Joint press release: Members of European Parliament write to Ursula von der Leyen / Win-win situation for the transformation of the steel industry and more flexibility for the automotive industry and manufacturers

The use of green steel should be recognized for car manufacturers for achieving their CO2 targets, thus giving them more flexibility. This is what four influential members of the largest group in the European Parliament (EPP, Christian Democrats) are calling for. Environmental policy spokesperson Dr. Peter Liese, social policy spokesperson Dennis Radtke, industrial policy spokesperson Dr. Christian Ehler, and transport policy spokesperson Jens Gieseke write in a letter to Ursula von der Leyen that this promotes technology neutrality and life cycle thinking while providing incentives for the production of green steel in Europe.

In this respect, they speak of a win-win situation: “We in the EPP have long been calling for the CO2 passenger car regulation to be amended so that it serves climate protection but does not unilaterally prescribe certain technologies. Committing to just one technology is the wrong approach. Also a hybrid vehicle produced using green steel is very beneficial for climate protection. And this should be recognized in the calculation. We also urgently need a market for green steel so that steel companies that have started their transformation also have a corresponding market. We are confident that our appeal will be taken into account in the proposal coming next Tuesday. Our proposal therefore kills two birds with one stone.”

The Commission will present its proposal next Tuesday. In addition to the urgently needed relaxation of the combustion engine ban through the inclusion of plug-in hybrids, range extenders, and alternative fuels, the Commission should also present approaches for the systematic consideration of green steel.
